Definition of Suffering- “Time of the Doves” -Rodoreda

After reading “Time of the Doves” by Rodoreda I genuinely believe this book is the definition of suffering. In “Time of the Doves” we follow our protagonist Natalia as she goes through the Spanish Civil War and face major losses. This book had me feeling bad for Natalia through and through. I have never seen …

Week 7- The time of the Doves

“The Time of the Doves” was an interesting read. I feel as if it had many complexities and details and moved much faster than some of the other books. There was so much that was covered in this book. Throughout Natalia’s life, we see war, hardships, love, and resilience. I feel like we really got to see Natalia’s life up close. The theme of love is evident in this book. Through Natalia’s romantic relationships with different men, particularly her husband Quimet. This relationship seems very complex. As it starts off…read more

Hello everyone, hope you all enjoyed your break!  Mercè Rodoreda’s book “The Time of the Doves” centers on the life of Natalia (a young woman), against the backdrop of Barcelona during and after the Spanish Civil War. It tells the story of the young woman who was originally engaged to Pere. Still, it also shows […]

The Time of the Doves

Hello all, welcome back to the blog. This weeks read is The Time of the Doves by Merce Rodoreda, which is one of the most prominent works of Catalan literature. The Time of the Doves – Motherhood, Femininity, and Perspectives

At first glance, the title “The Time of the Doves” immediately reminded me of peace, hope, and freedom; however, having read the novel, I find this contrary to what Natalia endures in reality as she unfolds a feminine perspective of the Spanish Civil War, and the effects it had on her life. I view Natalia’s […]

Time of the doves

I feel like I say this every week, and I always mean it, but this is now my favourite book we have read so far. First of, I’d like to say how much I hated Quimet. He took advantage of Natalia’s naive personality and trapped her in a marriage. He was toxic, had major jealousy […]

The Time of the HOLES! Trypophobia in Mercè Rodoreda’s Time of the Doves

Woah. The title made me think it would be like a nice romantic novel in Spain with roses and dancing, but it was in fact a not nice and not romantic book, which actually did include roses and dancing. Doves … Continue reading →

Time of the Doves

This week’s reading, Time of the Doves, I quite liked. The writing style, description, and dialogue were interesting and kept me engaged with the story. I really felt immersed in Natalia’s story; I felt her sorrow, her fear, her joy, etc. But Natalia didn’t seem to have an easy time with her first marriage. Her […]

Mercè Rodoreda, “The Time of the Doves”

Mercè Rodoreda’s novel, “The Times of the Dove,” was a captivating and page-turning read told through the lens of a resilient and hardworking mother who struggled through the Spanish Civil War. The narrator, Natalia, provided readers with valuable insights into how women lived through the war and the challenges they had to face to provide […]

The Women, War, and Doves – Mercy Rodoreda

The Time of the Doves by Mercé Rodoreda is a novel that allows readers to understand a war from a woman’s point of view. The novel is set in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War, but there are hardly any fight scenes, and it’s more about the story of this woman Natalia, with her […]
