Bombal – Shrouded Woman
Posted by: Sally
Impressions This week’s reading on Shrouded Woman was written in a poetic style with an imaginary and descriptive expression. The literature was like a fusion between a poem and a novel. The usage of literary devices such as similes and anaphoras, instills a vivid scenery. For example, the word falling is used in the following […] read full post >>

In “The Shrouded Woman” by María Luisa Bombal, Ana Maria looks back on the people in her life after her death. I found this book slower and more difficult to get through compared to “Mad Toy” but I enjoyed Bombal’s poetic style of writing. The recurring... read full post >>

The Shrouded Woman – The Feminine Perspective

The Shrouded Woman by Bombal was this weeks required reading, which is sort like a series of vignettes inspired one by one by different people who have come to visit this dead woman at her funeral, and is then told from her perspective. I think just the premise of this kind of novel seems to […] read full post >>

Hey everyone! I’m really excited to talk about this week’s reading, “The Shrouded Woman” by Maria Luisa Bombal. Firstly, the themes that were covered in general were super intriguing to me. I love thinking about life, love and the afterlife on my own time and am generally a fairly existential thinker so I personally really […] read full post >>
Week IV – God, I Love Female Authors

Wow. This was definitely a refreshing change from Breton and his not-so-nice narrator last week. Although both touched on misogyny in one way or another, at least this time it was from the experience of a real woman. To some, that may be more upsetting, but to me, it’s moving. Whether fictional or not, the […] read full post >>
The Shrouded Woman

This book is truly art. Bombal’s writing style, to me, resonated like poetry, each word a carefully crafted verse. After reading Robert Arlt, this felt like on the other spectrum of “quality” writing. Throughout the book, I found myself immersed in her use of repetition such as “falling” for imagery and bringing out our emotions. […] read full post >>

“… must we die in order to know certain things?” | death stripping our boundaries in Bombal’s “Shrouded Woman”

This week’s novella is the second read for me in this course and although I do wish that I was able to take more of my time with it — which is why I’m considering rereading it— it did feel more satisfying to read than Proust. My most probable reason is it simply being easier […] read full post >>

A fine line between life and death 30.01.2024 Firstly, I would like to point out that this read was much more enjoyable for me than Combray. Not only was the storyline captivating, but the unique narration and writing styles kept you thoroughly involved in the story. I find the concept of the narration being told […] read full post >>
