My name is Coltrane Yan. I am a 4th year student studying Economics and Statistics. This course is my final requirement for graduation which is both exciting and terrifying. That being said, I’m excited to dive into the material.
A variety of interesting personal points on RMST 202
1. I don’t know who Marcel Proust is, but I’ve heard his name mentioned many times before. That could be a good thing (like Salinger) or a bad thing (like Joyce).
2. I’m interested to explore a variety of works which I would never read on my own accord. Most specifically translated works, as well as philosophical fiction. Most of my reading is non-fiction, besides Game of Thrones.
3. I have had a tough time reading for pleasure in my past ENGL/LIT courses at UBC, but seeing as we have a lot of novels to get through I will have to learn quickly. I am going to try not having any other personal novels on the go during the semester, hopefully that can help.
4. I am especially excited to learn reading strategies to decipher meaning from the novels. I don’t often take enough time to let what I’ve read sink in until its time to write an essay or draft, so I will be conscious of learning these strategies and doing them as we read.
